New Port Entrance

Motril Port needs a new direct entrance for long-load, articulated lorries, such as the ones that transport the blades for wind-turbine towers.

MOT 74m Blades OnLThe good thing is that the port will soon have one, as 17 construction companies have placed bids for the contract – the majority of which are based in Granada.

The plan to provide direct access to the Azucenas dock within the port is called Project Cargo and will give the said access from the autovía via a lane 30 metres wide and 240 in length.

Now with the bids in – the period for submitting them concluded on the 9th of April – they will be evaluated. Then, later this month, the winning bid will be announced and a further month given for the two parties to finalise the contract.

As can be seen by the width of the access road, it has been designed to give better manoeuvring room for these long loads in order to enter the port and reach the dockside for loading

Spain is one of the top producers of these wind-turbine generators and one of the main factories is in the south of Jaén, so with the A-44 connection, Motril Port is ideally placed for the embarking area for such structures to be shipped to any other European sea port, as well as beyond.

Between January and March this year Azucenas has handled 731,767 tonnes of cargo, which makes it the best quarter in the records of the Port Authorities… and that’s with the pandemic going on.
