Day Centre for Special Needs

Almuñécar is still steering towards building a day centre for people with special needs, which will be built on the cleared ground were the Turismo Tropical complex used to stand and which is presently being used as summer parking.

The demolition of the abandoned Turismo Tropical complex in Almuñécar began in December 2024 after a decade of closure, clearing the site for the new Residencia Senior Tropical project.

The Provincial Council has begun the process to award a construction contract for the new complex, which will have educational, therapeutic, and recreational activities, with the safety, comfort, and accessibility conditions that this type of facility requires.

The planned investment is around 827,000 euros for this single storey complex divided into three different areas: administration, daily activities and a staff area.

Editorial comment: The Ideal article on the subject says that the new centre will be built on Avenida de Europa where the old, open-air, Cine Auditórium stands, in front of the Parque Majuelo, but the site is on the Paseo de San Cristóbal, not far from Chinasol.

At present, children with problems of this nature have had to be taken to Motril or Salobreña.

As you say. Much needed I’m sure. Nearer the sea. Whereas the other site is nearer Mercadona??
A shame to lose much need parking too. But you are right. Children with needs should have been catered for years ago. I’m surprised that Motril and Salobrena have such facilities. Yet Almunecar did not.
