Hookah Heist

A burglar broke into a bar down on the Costa Tropical and stole 500 euros from the cash register and table-football machine, along with several hookahs.

No, we haven’t misspelt hooker because hookahs are water pipes used to smoke specially made, often flavoured, tobacco called shisha.

Anyway, this break-in occurred around four in the morning on the 24th of April last year and the burglar, who is a foreign resident, was caught and faced a judge in Motril and was sentenced to 42 months in prison.

However, that same judge decided to substitute the prison sentence for being expelled from Spain for the next seven years.

Not keen on leaving Sunny Spain, he appealed before the Provincial Law Court, hoping to get a lighter sentence, claiming that he had been drunk and stoned when he burgled the bar. He also returned some of his booty, which only turned to be out parts of hookahs but none of the cash.

The Appeals Court in Granada was not impressed and pointed out that being an occasional pot head does not reduce criminal responsibility. However, it appears that they did lessen the sentence a bit, banning him from returning to spain for six, instead of seven years.
