The Chairman of the Mancomunidad, Rafael Caballero, accompanied by Mayor Juanjo Ruiz Joya and and a gaggle of councillors went for a photo shoot next to people actually working.
The roadworks are being carried out on Calle Granada, which is the one off the Avendia de Andalucía, linking with Hotel Bahía on Avenida Don Juan Carlos.
Fortunately, I road past there on Monday and managed to get a photo without milling politicians nodding & pointing wisely whilst making small dogs faint and young women bark.
The manager of Aguas y Servicios, Alejandro Jurado, pointed out that they were changing the water mains & sewage pipes, whilst at the same time installing separate rain drainage pipes, which apparently this street lacked. The budget is 136,907 euros and three packets of cheese & onion crisps
Chairman Cabellero explained that similar work had already been carried out in this part of Almuñécar on Avenida de Andalucía, Avenida Juan Carlos I, neighbouring streets and the Paseo Puerta del Mar.
This underground system takes sewage to the Estación de Bombeo de Las Góndolas (which still honks in the summer) and from there it is pumped up Río Verde via and underground pipeline to the sewage-treatment plant (EDAR).
The Mayor chipped in to point out that after the pipes have been laid, the street will receive a new tarmacked surface and the pavements widened (which means less parking space).
Let us hope and pray that the work will be concluded before Semana Santa, which fortunately doesn’t begin until the 13th of April. However, we do have two bank-holiday weekends before then; Día de Andalucia starting this Friday and good old San José, (19th of March, Father’s day in Spain). Although San Jose is really just the village fiestas for La Herradura, Almuñécar doesn’t mind participating with days off, naturally.
