Officers from the Maritime Service of the Guardia Civil intercepted a small boat off Salobreña which wasLHR Guardia Civil Maritime Service carrying 18 immigrants from Maghreb. All were taken to Motril port for processing and medical checks.

Oddly enough, I was witness to their first attempt to come ashore on Velilla Beach in Almuñécar, next to the Aquatropic water park. However, the police were waiting on the beach for them and the small vessel pulled away from the beach and headed in the direction of Salobreña.

I followed it along as far as Playa El Pozuelo in Almuñécar, but they were obviously ‘spooked’ by the police presence also shadowing them and aborted two more attempts to land.

The 18 occupants were all males with one minor amongst them. They were intercepted less than 100 metres from the beach in Salobreña and arrived in Motril at 12:30h.

After their Red Cross checks and a lot of form filling, they were handed over to the Policía Nacional for detention until their repatriation.
