The Guardia Civil has arrested a man in Pinos Puentes (near Granada) for allegedly charging 24,000 euros for a series of construction jobs that were never carried out. Why 24,000 and not a nice round 25,000 euros? Because 24,000 euros is exactly 4-million, die-hard pesetas – even after so many years, people might use euros, but they continue to ‘think’ in pesetas.

Port Police Cuts

Reductions made by the Government to the number of police assigned to the port of Motril has attracted considerable criticism. A spokesperson for the workers at the port said that this 50% cut in policing manpower was both detrimental for the Melilla-ferry users and the residents of the port area in general.
Granada Labour Reform Protest

Some 12,000 people gathered in the centre of Granada on Wednesday 29th February, to protest against labour reforms.
At the head of the marchers were local representatives from many of the unions, including the CCOO and the UGT who sent their leaders in the Granada, Ricardo Flores and Manuela Martinez, who called the reforms, “useless, inefficient and unfair,” a sentiment backed by the United Left and PSOE representatives.

The classical string sextet, Hyperion Esemble, performed works by Boccherini, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, to the delight of the audience gathered at the Casa de la Cultura in Almuñécar. This performance closed the February cultural agenda of Juventudes Musicales.
Mirador Facelift

Anybody who has been up to the top of the old town, to the parking next to the church, will have seen workmen digging up the concrete surface in front of the church. The reason for this is that the Public Works Department of the Town Hall has decided to do something about the damp problem caused by rainwater seeping down into the tunnel.
Ex-Municipal Secretary Speaks Out

The ex Municipal Secretary, Arantxa Ibarreche, has spoken out for the first time since her dismissal, which took place at the beginning of this month. She was invited to speak at a meeting of the Asociacion Mujeres Ecologistas sexitanas, where most of the apparatus of the CA, including the ex-Mayor, Juan Carlos Benavides, was present.
