Motril’s cemetery has a big problem; there’s hardly any space left for ‘new tenants.’ In fact, there are only eight burial niches left, so if you want one… you had better hurry.
Of course, the opposition party puts the blame squarely on the shoulders of the ruling party, for not having done something about it earlier; before the situation reached this ‘surreal’ situation.
The truth of the matter is that there are some 2nd-hand niches going – ones belonging to families that can no longer afford to continue paying rent for the departed’s accommodation… “Only one careful owner,” sort of thing.
But whatever the real availability figures are, Motril has outgrown its 200-year-old cemetery and a new one is needed, but within today’s economical straightjacket, where can the money be found to build one?
The ex-Mayor, Carlos Rojas did promise that a new one would be situated and ready in the Cerro del Torro area by the end of 2011, but if you’re planning on dropping dead, don’t pop along to the Cerro del Torro, because there is bugger all there for any self-respecting corpse.
The PSOE opposition said that the PP Administration shouldn’t try blaming the Junta, which just happens to be PSOE controlled.
So, what’s to be done, besides refraining from making things worse by shuffling off your mortal coil? The Councillor for Urbanismo, José Luis Chica, admits that the cemetery is bursting at the seams, but points out that the possibility of extending the existing one onto a nearby plot exists – cheap and easy, but short term.
The long-term solution, however, is a plot of land to the north of the town, next to the old municipal rubbish dump… charming!
