Cleaning Out Water Tanks

The Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa Tropical said that Aguas y Servicios (a private, water-utility company), had cleaned out the water storage structure in Molvízar which provides water for the coast.

The said water-storage structure, the Estación de Tratamiento de Agua Potable, is a settling tank for the untreated water coming in from the Béznar-Rules system.

The Chairman of the Mancomunidad de la Costa Tropical, Rafael Caballero, explained that the said work entailed bypassing the tank whilst it was being cleaned out and to treating the incoming water through filters using coagulation and oxidising-disinfecting.

Quoting from Wikipedia: “Coagulation and flocculation are important processes in fermentation and water treatment with coagulation aimed to destabilize and aggregate particles through chemical interactions between the coagulant and colloids, and flocculation to sediment the destabilised particles by causing their aggregation into floc.”

The Head of Aguas y Servicios, Alejandro Jurado, explained that they had cleared out the mud and sediment that had been accumulating on the tank’s bottom and walls.

He also explained that the work would have required cutting off the supply to Almuñécar, La Herradura, Salobreña, Ítrabo, Molvízar and Lobres, if they hadn’t set up a bypass.

Once cleaned out, they refilled the huge water-storage structure and all the while that the clean-up operation was being carried out, normal water pressure in homes was maintained.

It’s domestic water that comes out of your taps which is potable 😉 – Martin
