Minor Loses Life on Motorcycle

Consternation in Almuñécar over the death of Martín, a 16-year-old lad, who died in a road accident on his way to class.

Mayor Ruiz Joya expressed his condolences via social media to the boy’s family, as well as to the staff and pupils of IES Puerta del Mar. The Motril Table-Tennis Club, of which he was a member, also expressed their condolences.

For their part the IES Puerta del Mar announced, “With deep regret, the educational community of the IES Puerta del Mar says goodbye to Martín, who at 16 left us in a tragic traffic accident. Silence reigns in every corners of our high school.”

Martin had recently transferred to the IES Al Ándalus where he was studying Art.

The teenager died at 09.30h yesterday morning in the Taramay area. According to the Almuñécar Local Police, the lad lost control of the bike along the link road between the N-340 roundabout with the A-7 autovía and ended up at the bottom of a barranco.

Besides the presence of an ambulance and officers from both the Policia Local and the Guardia Civil, there was also an emergency helicopter to take the victim to hospital if necessary. However, the victim died at the scene of the accident.

The Policia Local also say that he had only had a bike licence for a short time.

Editorial comment: this stretch of road is notorious for its sharp bends where you have to keep your wits about you, especially descending from the autovía down to the Taramay roundabout. For a young lad with a recently acquired bike licence in a rush to get to school, it is lethal, as this case proves.
