The Almuñécar Councillor for Beaches and the Environment, Lucía González, has given the figures behind the clean up following fiesta week.
The municipal, cleaning company, FCC, bolstered its workers with an extra 48 personnel for the week and removed 436,000 kilos of litter; or if you prefer, 436 tonnes.
The rubbish was produced both in the area of the fairground (Plaza de Blas Infantes), the area where the Fería de Día was placed (next to the medical centre) and on the beaches.
Councillor González explained that just during the early hours of the 16th, 55,000 kilos of litter were collected on Playa Puerta del Mar alone, so that the beach could be returned to the use of beachgoers later in the morning.
She concluded by congratulating the cleaning crews for their work during this week of massive influx, leaving the beaches cleaned up & ready for the arrival of beachgoers each day.

Reader’s comment: “Unfortunately for those of us that live in the Marina de Este, we do not benefit from such cleanups! And so the beach and parking areas and Avenida Marina del Este remains a mess. We do however continue to pay our taxes! So much for the jewel in the crown!” – Marco
