Ecologistas en Acción have sent a request to several administrations calling for the demolition of the structure that was to be a 7-star hotel in Almuñécar.
The hotel project, which is little more than a structural shell consisting of floors and pillars, has remained in this state for over a decade and is, without doubt, an eyesore, as is the one at the entrance to Almuñécar on the N-340, approaching from La Herradura.
As part of their En Acción por el Litoral campaign involving their yacht, Diosa Maat, they also consider that the structure is on a shoreline hill which should be a protected area. They have criticised heavily the different administrations involved (Town Hall and the Junta de Andalucía) for letting this situation persist.
The Provincial Secretary for the Ecologistas en Acción, Juan Antonio Martínez, explained that the case of this abandoned hotel structure is just one of several that they are involved with. This year, for example, they gave La Herradura a Bandera Negra because of the projects that will further fill the coastline with bricks and concrete, they say. Another is the intention of Salobreña Town Hall of turning the municipalities last virgin beach into a construction site for hotels and luxury villas.
The abandoned hotel structure in question, with a budget of 230,000,000 euros, was to be the first 7-star hotel in Spain, built on the Peñon del Lobo, which lies between Cotobro and the Marina del Este.
Finally, and unfortunately, the new PGOU drawn up by Almuñécar Town Hall under the PP, would allow for the development of this area, the ecologists fear.
