Anybody that’s been to this village the other side of Motril would not expect its only bar to have been the scene of a kidnapping at gunpoint.
In the early hours of Sunday the 17th, three men forced a lad from the village into their car at gunpoint, much to the astonishment of everybody, including the bar’s parrot, if it’s still alive after all these years.
A friend of the victim immediately contacted the police with the result that the gang did not get far, thanks to a rock group.
Yes, a rock group, because Spanish, aging, heavy-rock gods, Medina Azahara, were performing a gig in La Rábita, and the Guardia Civil had extra hands on duty that night.
The units down on the coast were alerted and a road block was set up, involving several patrol cars.
The car, a red Honda with an Almería plate, managed to get around the first car but ran into the other two blocking the road a few metres further on.
The young lad was freed and the three men, all from Almería were arrested. A starter gun and blank cartridges were found in the suspects’ car, along with a rather nasty knife.
The victim, in his statement before the police, said that it was a case of mistaken identity and that they were really looking for somebody else concerned with a drugs deal.
