The Problem of the Interest

The Mayor of Almuñécar’s cabinet has agreed to calculate the legal interest to determine the total amount it must return to the developer for the failed Torre Galera urban planning agreement.

When this agreement was signed in 2005, which hinged on then Mayor Benavides’ getting a new Urban Development Plan approved by the Junta (which it never was) the Town Hall had 60 days to return the almost ten million paid in by the developer if the new PGOU was rejected.

However, it wasn’t just 60 days that slid by, but rather 20 years with every day of those 20 years clocking up interest on the sum.

Now, the present party in power, the PP, have occuppied the Mayoralty for the last 15 years (since 2011) during which time they have been working to eliminate all municipal debt. As for this ticking timebomb, the spent those years kicking the can down the street, appealing before ever higher levels of lawcourts until now when they could appeal no further.

Let’s not kid ourselves, it was Benavides who caused the problem, not the PP, but at the end of the day, it’s neither Benavides’ CA or the Mayor’s PP that have created this problem, but rather the political class as a whole.

Before they Built on It

The problem is that politicians can screw up in this manner yet they are not held financially responsible for their follies, but rather the residents and non-resident, property owners of Almuñécar who will foot this bill, either through higher taxes or the eliminations of municipal services.
