Guadalfeo-Ecologistas en Acción have brought to the attention of the authorties the presence of untreated domestic and industrial wastewater discharges, ending up in barrancos and irrigation ditches along the Costa Tropical.

This situation, they point out, is something that happens each summer, owing to the huge increase in the population, when the coast has trouble handling even the normal demand on the systems.
One of the problems pointed out by the ecologists is the existence of numerous housing developments and isolated buildings that are still not properly connected to the sewage system. Their wastewater can end up contaminating wells, springs, and aquifers.
Added to this is that there are still coastal village whose wastewater does not receive proper treatment and that they continue to pump their waste into the sea via short underwater pipelines.
The ecologists also slam the existence of industrial wastewater being discharged into the sea via outfalls; i.e. pipes leading out several dozen metres into the sea.
Ecologistas en Acción points out that while administrations announced that certain particular place the water quality is suitable for bathing when put into doubt, “the perception of those who use the beaches is very different when they encounter patches, waste, or water with an unpleasant appearance and smell.”
Finally, they said that they have been denouncing such situations for the last 25 years, each year as summer gets underway and in all this time the responsible administrations have not offered a solution. For this reason, the ecologists demand that they “stop treating this problem as just isolated incidents and face, once and for all, the problem.”

Umm. That would mean spending money from either the EU (preferably the EU) or the taxpayers. Plus fining those that build and run “waste water” into the fields, barrancos, rivers and sea. It will not make either local government nor the ruling parties very popular. But it will be better for the environment. Perhaps they could start checking the waste water discharged from the past developments over the decades and if found to be insufficient or almost non existent . Get them closed down until rectified. New proposed hotels, make sure they comply with the sewerage system rules. But again it will not be popular and will cost money. Voters can be fickle and politicians can lie straight in bed.
