There is a bit of irony in the case of a Councilor for Equality allegedly threatening a woman in order to stop her daughter testifying against her son in a trial concerning a case of sexual aggression.

The Provincial Prosecutor has recommended a 4-year, prison term for Councillor Margarita Álvarez Ortiz (IU), for the alleged crime of obstruction of justice, as well as issuing threats and causing bodily harm to the victim.

The Councillor had an accomplice on that occasion; the mother of another boy who was also allegedly involved in the sexual-assault case.

The Public Prosecutor also recommends that the Councillor be barred from office, as well as both aggressors paying compensation to the tune of 4,880 euros.

The incident took place in June, 2023. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the two accused, aware that the victim’s daughter had been summoned to testify as a witness in the hearing at the juvenile court in Granada for an alleged sexual assault, decided to intimidate the mother.

The mother was leaving a hairdresser’s when the two approached her. After using verbal threats, they set upon her (all according to the Public Prosecutor) pulling her hair and hitting her about the head. They reportedly threw her to the ground and continued to attack her. After this, the left the scene of the assault.

This incident had been preceded two months earlier, when the two woman turned up at the victim’s house. They confronted her with, “Alcahuetas, tenéis un grupo de Whatsapp y habéis denunciado a todos en contra de nuestros hijos, me has buscado la ruina, tenías que haber mediado con la madre de la niña para que no me denuncie.” (Blabbermouth, you’re on a Whatsapp group turning everybody against our sons; you’re going to ruin me! You should have convinced the mother of the girl not to report me.”

Right, if we have lost you, let’s simplify: The son of the Councillor and the son of another woman are going to stand trial in a case of sexual assault against a girl. The woman who was targeted by the Councilor is the mother of a girl who witnessed the assault and is going to testify. The Councillor went after the witness’s mother to stop her daughter from testifying.
