A serious accident at the Cerredo Mine, in Degaña (Asturias), left at least five miners dead and four seriously injured, most of whom with burns.
Two were taken to the Centro Médico in Villablino with burns but owing to the severity of their conditions one was transferred to Hospital de León with third-degree burns to the face and the other to the Hospital del Bierzo, in Ponferrada.

A third victim suffered mulitiple bruising al over his body and the fourth suffered head injuries and was taken to the hospital in Cangas del Narcea .
Lastly another victim was located just after noon and taken to hospital whilst another miner remains unaccounted for, so searching the collapsed mine continues.
The incident occurred around 09.40h today, which was initially thought to have been caused by an exposion. All of the emergency services; fire, ambulance and police, were despatched
The regional government belonging to the Principality of Asturias asked for assistance from neighbouring Castilla y León, which sent a medical-evacuation helicopter.
