Motril Port’s Speciality

If you regularly travel up the A-44 to Granada, you will probably have seen the lorries bringing down the huge propeller blades for the wind-powered generators on their way to Motril Port.

And there in lies the niche that Motril Port has found for itself; handling oversized cargo arriving by road for export.

The wind-turbines are made by a company called Vestas at their factory in Daimiel (Ciudad Real/Castilla-La Mancha) and their massive propeller blades travel down by road to Motril Port where they are embarked for such destinations as Morocco, Germany, Sweden, Finland, the UK and even the USA.

In fact, they have handled over 5,000 units over the last five years and it’s all thanks to the improved dock area and the A-44 autovía that ends literally at the port’s gates.

The first shipload this year was destined for a windfarm project in Texas. Each blade was 80 metres long, which are the largest variety that Vestas makes at the moment.

The blades of the new V163-4.5MW wind-turbines cover an extra 18% of sweep, which increases the annual power production by 10%.
