The Almuñécar Branch of the Socialista (PSOE) have condemned the alleged lack of interest on the part of the Mayor and his team over the deterioration of the castle walls.
Local party Secretary, Josué Díaz, considers it regrettable that Mayor Juan José Ruiz Joya and the Councillor for Culture, seem unconcerned about the town’s historical heritage, going so far as to consider it “irresponsible.”

In the early hours of Wednesday, strong wind and rain caused a small part of the castle wall, dating back to the 11th Century, to crumble.
The PSOE Secretary concluded with irony that the Mayor’s team must be too distracted by tourism fairs.
Editorial comment: whilst it’s true that the part of the wall that fell down is hardly a massive amount (about 1.5 sq/m of wall) it does warrant at least a rapid inspection to see if a larger section of the wall could also come down; i.e., it’s indicative of a bigger problem.

Reader’s comment: “Not just the walls of castles falling down to mother nature. Casa grounds by its pool two plots up from me. During Saturday rugby. I thought it was thunder or a small earthquake or the English pack rolling forward. Nope about thirty feet of hillside rock collapsing.” – Patrick Barry Story
