Ice Alarm

Every year in northern Sweden the famous Ice Hotel is rebuilt, using huge ice blocks, cut from the frozen Torne River in Jukkasjärvi, Kiruna. Always fully booked, this strange, but beautiful ice building has been created every year since 1990. However, the Swedish National Housing Board has decided, that even this building must be fitted with fire alarms!

Sweden and Finland offer fantastic musical events during this summer, with chamber music, opera, jazz, rock festivals, you name it. There are gigs and festivals for every taste, but I would like here to take up two of the most typical and folksy summer festivities; Sing-along at Skansen in Stockholm (Allsång på Skansen) and the Finnish Tango Festival in Seinäjoki , Southern Ostrobothnia.
Hornet Sex Hoax?

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story… or so the saying goes. But we have to confess to being more than a tad disappointed that this story, that was doing the worldwide rounds of the Internet, may well be a hoax. It concerns a Swedish farmer called Hasse and his death by sexual intercourse with a hornet’s nest.
Estonian Swedes

At Los Nordicos last week we had the privilege to listen to an interesting lecture by historian Bengt Kummel, PhD, from Finland. The topic was “The dramatic circumstances around the transfer of Estonian Swedes to Sweden in 1944”. Dr. Kummel started by giving some historic data on the Swedish population of Estonia, a linguistic minority residing in the coastal areas and islands of what today is western and northern Estonia.
