Dogs have the unfortunate habit of trying to catch wild mountain goats, but they are simply not built with the same 4x4 potential that goats have, which gets dogs into trouble.
Take the case of a man who was out walking with his faithful mutt in the area of the natural-park of Los Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo.
It was turning out to be a pleasant walk for the 50-year-old, dog owner until his hound caught sight of a mountain goat. The dog thought, “bet I can catch that” and the goat thought, “that idiot’s going to try and chase me!” And before you could say, “Hold my beer!” the chase was on.
It was a beautiful sunny Saturday in February around 17.30h, so what could possibly go wrong? Trouble was that both the owner and his dog had to be rescued when they got stuck in a rocky barranco above the Playa del Cañuelo with the goat sniggering from a safe distance – actually there were more than one.
The man called 112 and soon the Guardia Civil and the fire service went out to rescue them. The man managed to reach safety by following instructions but the dog was another matter because fire personnel had to climb down and fetch it.
It ended two hours after the rescuers’ arrival with everybody in good health and the goats having had a good laugh.
Trouble is that the dog owner will now be fined for not having his dog on a lead in a protected area (natural park), which could set him back 600 euros.

Dog owners so often do not have their animals under control, usually working on the principle that their animal is well behaved; until it attacks another animal, or human.
