Parking in front of Garages

Starting today, garage owners in Almuñécar and La Herrdura will be able to park in front of their own garages.

There are two things that should be mentioned, although the first is obvious; this does not apply to multiple-vehicle or communal garages. The second point is that you have to apply for, and be in possession of, a special card.

There are 959 street-level private garages within the municipality of Almuñécar and this new card will not only permit them to park in front of their garages (instead of putting them away inside) but also allow garage owners to authorise other vehicle owners to do so.

The Councillor for Traffic, Luis Aragón, said that it was an innovative idea as well as an electoral pledge that the ruling party, the PP, has come through with. He also said that it will increase the towns street parking capacity by 959 spaces.

Once the garage owner has obtained the parking card from the Town Hall, which require a previous inspection by the Policía Local to make sure that the garage has a valid vado licence, the driver should display the card on his or her dashboard in view through the windscreen.

Lastly, the card comes with no cost for the garage owner, other than the cost of issuing it; i.e., a one-off payment.

Editorial comment: does this only reward garage owners who are too lazy to park their car inside the garage? Most of them won’t let other people use the card but will just dump their car in front of the garage instead of opening the garage and putting it away, surely?
