The Guájar Alto fire, which broke out around 13.50h, had necessitated over 200 firefighters and 21 aircraft, including two twin-engine amphibious bombers by 19.00h.
Six fire engines with 3,500 litres of water each, three bulldozers and three heavy helicopters capable of delivering 4,500 litres of water, mixed with fire retardants were the big boys called in to contain the fire, but by late afternoon a wind from the South-East began to complicate matters.
The fire which began on forest land between Guájar Faragüit and Guájar Alto has been kept away from the urban areas of these two picturesque mountain villages.
During the night units from Málaga, Córdoba, Almería and Jaén were called in to help, raising the total number of firefighters to over 300. A specialised unit using drones patrolled the perimeters during the night to provide aerial assistance until the return of the helicopters and aeroplanes with the arrival of dawn,
It is still not known how it was started and it is too early to know how much forest and mountain shrub it has consumed.
