Rambla Clearing

Regional MP, Carmen Crespo, said during a visit to Motril that the Junta would spend 700,000 euros on clearing vegetation from the ramblas and rivers.

MOT Choked Ramblas 400x250The said MP for Agriculture, Fishing, Water and Rural Development said that the work was necessary to ensure that flash floods could be channelled efficiently down these dry, water courses, both on the coast and in the Alpujarra.

The rest of the Andalusian hinterland is the responsibility of the Central Government.

This Junta funding will be employed to clear out all vegetation that could choke dry water courses, be they riverbeds or ramblas, along a total of 110 kilometres.

Readers might remember when both Almuñécar rivers burst their banks in 2007 and caused extensive flooding, which the Seaside Gazette reported on at the time.

€700000 eh. That’s a drop in the EU ocean! But looks good on a CV and something being done is better then nowt.
The Ramblas. !! Yes vegetation does amazingly grow in these areas. But added to it is the discarded waste by lazy twits. Why go to the tip. When you can dump.?
Perhaps some of that money could go to the towns and villages. That have seen their population’s increase dramatically over the years. Perhaps the effulant issue should be sorted out too. ??

Not convinced that is the right solution. First flash flooding is typically brought about by intense rainfall falling on rock hard ground which is unable to absorb the water. If a lot more trees we planted in the river catchments a lot of the water would be absorbed before it reaches the watercourses. Second it’s hard to envisage growing vegetation causing the watercourses to flood such that the sheer volume of water caused the overtopping of the banks. Of course dead trees mixed in with human detritus can easily form dam like structures and that should be cleared
