It was back in the days of mid-lockdown, April 2020, when an unusual incident took place on a block roof-top terrace in Zaidín - a man was stabbed.
This wasn’t some kind of Hollywood like scene between a villain and a hero in a spy film; this was when people used to go out onto their balconies or rooftop terraces and applaud ambulance crews, police officers and other emergency workers below on the street.
It was a ritual that took place most evening around eight.
On the roof was a 52-year-old father who had his 2-year-old daughter in his arm and he was cheering health workers, who were the frontline troops in the war against Covid.
However, another man from the same block decided that he was making to much noise so he went out onto the rooftop terrace and stabbed him, in the abdomen and in the back – it didn’t matter to the aggressor that the victim was holding his toddler in his arms.
The victim survived the five stab wounds and now, at last, the trial is set to begin.
The Public Prosecutor recommends 8-years-and-6-months’ imprisonment, who stands accused of attempted murder. There is also a 6-month fine at 10 euros a day (approx. 1,800 euros)
What we didn’t know (so we couldn’t report on it) in our original article at the time, which you can read here, was that the victim’s wife took on the aggressor and tried to take the knife from him. She received cuts to her hand and had to be treated later for anxiety, but she did manage to do it. Furthermore, the toddler also had cuts because she was in her father’s arms, as stated before.
The first emergency personnel at the scene were the Policía Nacional, even before the ambulance arrived. The officers managed to staunch the blood loss. In the meantime other officers went down to the attackers flat, where he had barricaded himself in. They broke their way in and arrested him.
Editorial comment: the original article says that the aggressor fled the building, which was the information available at the time.
