The Mayor of Almuñécar has responded to criticism from the main opposition party concerning her use of a company convicted of corruption to build the market.
She basically informed Juan Carlos Benavides that if he thought she had done something illegal, he should take it to court; in fact, she insists
She even announced that she and her team were studying the possibility of taking him to court as she considers his accusations, “go beyond the limits of what is considered politically correct.”
“I have no trouble answering each and every one of the accusations raised nor do I have anything to hide,” she stated, adding, “Sr. Benavides is following an outdated policy of harassment [in order to] bring my mayoralty down.”
She continued by saying that her cabinet’s intention was to build a municipal market, costing enough to ensure that it would last, unlike the one that Benavides built that lasted just 30 years. She also mentioned the botched aquarium that was built under the Benavides’ administration as well.
She claimed that the demolition of the old market had been organised just days before the three month lockdown and she didn’t exactly “have a hotline to the Prime Minister when he decided to impose it.”
She concluded by saying that Benavides accuses her of not splitting the job lot up so that small companies could participate in the building of the new market yet the Muncipal Surveyor had advised her not to permit it and that Benavides was hardly one to accuse others of favouritism where public contracts were concerned as “everybody knows that Hermanos García Motril, Anfransa, Cartuja etc, etc always got them under Benavides.”
Editorial comment: you can agree with some of the points she made but she seems to be missing (or is deliberately ignoring) that she hired a company that was convicted of illegally financing her party in Valencia, perhaps believing that those that vote for her wouldn’t give a damn. She said that the company had every right to put forward a bid and she had no legal right to reject it. However, their bid was not the cheapest one put forward.
Finally, perhaps she should inform her party leader, Pablo Casados, that his opposition tactics against the Central Government is, according to her own definition, “an outdated policy of harassment” [in order to] bring the Central Government down.

Although not the lowest bid on offer. Did the company offer a better deal in other ways. If found wanting. Should the work be halted until a legal decision is made. Or are the detractors lacking in bottle and finances.
