A Farewell to Arms

SPN Guardia Destroy Firearms JL20The Guardia Civil in Cantabria set about destroying 879 weapons as part of the Plan de Control de Armas de fuego (PICAF).

The weapons include those confiscated owing to the owner lacking a suitable permit, those handed in by their owners because they no longer want them, and replica firearms and starter pistols altered to use live ammunition.

Of those weapons destroyed, 114 were revolvers and pistols and 569 were ‘long arms’ (rifles and shotguns etc) These two groups make up 78% of the total. The 22% remaining include 130 white arms (cutting and stabbing weapons), adapted starting pistols and replica firearms, bows and crossbows.

This operation was carried out to coincide with the Día Internacional de Destrucción de Armas de Fuego.

Editorial comment: what a waste! I need a good shotgun up in the farm and would love to have an SLR like the ones I used back in the 70s in the forces. If I was considered responsible enough to use one when I was 18, then I sure am now that I am 63!
