Two local branches of the political party Ciudadanos; one in Motril and the other in Salobreña, are pushing for a beach road to connect the municipalities.
It’s not Río Guadalfeo that is blocking the way; there has long been a bridge over it, but the lack of political will and funds to connect Playa Granada to the Salobreña beach-front road.
Local Ciudadanos spokespersons Lola Sánchez and Plácido Leyva have sent a request to the Provincial Council; or better said, to their party representatives there.
“The completion of the project would mean a new economic and tourism boost for both municipalities, as well as giving use to the existing bridge, which is deteriorating,” said the Motril representative, whilst taking a swipe at the two major parties (PP/PSOE) for their failure to both connect the bridge to a beach road and to sort out the water-distribution system for Rules Dam.
The idea of connecting Salobreña to Playa Granada goes back to 1985 yet it wasn’t until 2007 that the bridge (building work began four years previously) was opened.
Since then the wide bridge, with its roundabouts at either end, fizzles out into narrow rutted tracks through the Vega until it connects with the road running from the N-340 to Playa Granada and the Golf course.
The original idea was to provide a connection between Salobreña and Motril without having to use the N-340, which in the summer back in those days was a nightmare. Since then, the N-340 has been superseded by the A-7 coastal autovia yet it would be a waste of a bridge not to build a beach road on the Motril side.
