The day fair – what’s that all about? I remember when it first started in Calle Pintor Manuel Rivera with a few rickety bars and some shading provided by tarpaulins.
It morphed up the street over the years, even getting running water! Even then it was seen by many as depriving local bars of much needed summer income. Last year gave us a large marquee on the P4 lorry park and hundreds of drunken kids vomiting and urinating in the near vicinity.
This year we have a massive tent, with lots of pointy baby tents and lots of mobile toilets. The main tent has been up for possibly 3 weeks already. At what cost and to whom? All for 3 days? We know from last year that the tent will be heaving with young folk and that someone, somewhere will be making a fortune, but at the expense of the local bars.
On one hand, the ayuntamiento is trying to encourage tourism, on the other, the first thing visitors this weekend will see is this Bacchanalian drunken fest.
My very rough and guesstimated cost is around 25k euros for the tent. Do the bars inside have to pay rental?

I might add the noise that comes out of the fairground and the Feria de Día is unbearable for people who live nearby, on Calle Larache and across the main road in Barrio La Paloma.
Lastly, the whole idea of depriving the town’s its largest surface parking area during three weeks of August is absolute lunacy. One week to set up up, one week whilst it runs, and one week to take it down.
The money that is spent in the feria goes to the fairground attractions company and the political and religious (hermandades) who have bars set up, skimming money from local bars and restaurants, who know that they can kiss goodbye to their evening takings… whilst their taxes directly finance this unfair competition.
