Araceli Morales, 60 years old, succumbed to her brutally inflicted injuries, allegedly caused by her 50-year-old husband. She passed away in Granada’s main hospital.

The Mayor of Motril has proclaimed two days’ mourning, starting from tomorrow (Monday 9th), for this resident of Calle Antillas in the San Antonio district of the town.

The attack occurred on the 20th of last month and townsfolk were shocked not only by yet another case of domestic or gender violence, but by the fact that when the police discovered the woman’s unconscious body in her bedroom, the man was sat watching the TV. She had been beaten up and then hit with a hammer on the head.

Araceli had spent two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit and was recovered enough to be returned to a normal ward, however, a sudden downturn took her in the early hours of the morning.

Personal note: Araceli occupied the bed next to my wife’s in the ICU and, as is always the case, families of patients in the ICU meet and get to know each other as they wait for the logically limited visiting times. My personal condolences and those of my wife’s family go out to the family of Araceli.
