A total of 20 people have been arrested, all allegedly involved in drug smuggling, in Nerja between the 21st of February and the 12th of March.
The police anti-drugs operation, which was carried out in two stages, involved the arrest of a Nerja municipal policeman and a Guardia Civil policeman based in Algarrobo.
Of the 20 arrests, the magistrate ordered the immediate incarceration of 15 of them, whilst the other five – the two policemen amongst them – have been released pending trial.
The first part of the police operation took place on the 21st/22nd of February with the arrest of twelve suspects. At that time the Guardia Civil intercepted a haul of 1.5 metric tonnes of hashish in the process of being landed on a beach within the Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park. This was when the Guardia Civil policeman was arrested.
Most of those detained were from Nerja, amongst them a foreign resident.
The second and latest swoop was carried out on the 12th of March, which was when the Nerja municipal policeman was arrested, together with eight other suspects. The policeman was at the police station when the arrest took place.
