Thieves broke into the Salobreña municipal market on the night of the 10th of February and raided several stalls. The police suspect that minors were responsible.
Once inside the thieves appeared to have been more intent on causing damage than taking valuables. In fact, they only took the small change in the stall-holders’ tills. No goods were taken, for example.
The burglary was not discovered until 06.30h on the 12th because the market doesn’t open on a Monday. The stall holder who discovered it immediately reported the discovery to the Policía Local… who reported it to the Guardia Civil, explained María Eugenia Rufino, Councillor for Markets.
Although the thieves actually gained access to nine stalls, they had tried forcing the locks of most of them. In a butcher’s stall, they plugged in a mincing machine and left it running, causing it to burn out.
The Councillor for Citizen Safety, MªCarmen Callejón said that the Guardia Civil and Policía Local spent most of the morning gathering evidence, and that by the size of the fingerprints, it looks like minors were involved.
Editorial Comment: This is just what the traders didn’t need in these lean times; things are tough enough as they are.
