Large Gas Deposit Uncovered
Basque leader, Patxi López, and Industry Minister, Berabé Unda, announced from Dallas, Texas where they are on tour, that a quantity of natural gas has been found near Ávala, equivalent to what the Basque Country consumes in sixty years, or what Spain would consume in five.
In Gran Enara, the area of the discovery, the companies involved made fourteen explorations, thirteen of which revealed the presence of thousands of millions of cubic meters of gas. López’ government thus announced an investment of 100 million euros for two further explorations to confirm the discovery. Natural gas represents 42 percent of energy consumption in the Basque Country, and at least for another ten
Attack of Jealousy
The National Police in Madrid arrested a young man who ran over a motorcyclist whom he thought was his ex-girlfriend’s new lover. The scene happened a few meters away from where the girlfriend lived, and she saw the whole thing from her window.
Victor, the 21-year-old tormented ex-man, was on his way in his car to pick her up to take her to work, when he espied a chap on a motorbike. He recognised him as a co-worker of his ex, suspected them of having paired up, and suspected he was on his way to the girl’s house. It was too much, jealousy inflamed his senses and, while the motorcyclist was stopped at a red light, Victor rammed his car straight into him.
The motorbike was embedded in a wall, and the young rider injured. This was when the girl arrived screaming at her ex. Soon enough police and ambulance arrived; Victor, with no priors to his name, was detained, and the young motorcyclist is in hospital although his condition is not thought serious.
Murcian Mayor Arrested
This title merely points to the on-going saga of political corruption in Spain; day after day, yet more bubble to the surface. The Guardia Civil arrested 8 people, among them the mayor of Aledo, Simón Alcaraz, who also belongs to the Regional Junta (PP) of Murcia. The arrests are part of Operation Library that began in 2008, and the charges against the arrested range from bribery to illegal business practices. Others arrested include former mayors, deputy mayors and councilmen.
I’ve remarked on this before in these pages, so a reminder: Spain is in another transition, this one from political corruption to some form of political cleanliness. It is not something that happens overnight, and these cases we still see in almost every daily paper, will continue to appear, and take note, almost all of these cases come from events that happened from 1997 to 2008. Politicians after 2008 have tried to keep things steadier than before owing to immense police pressure.
