The wind farm on the way to Lujar from Granada is generating a bit of controversy as well as electricity, it seems. The ecologist association, Buxus has denounced two of these impressive windmills – or ‘aero-generators’ as they are known in Spanish – for lacking the relevant environmental controls.
According to the report from Buxus the problem is two 1.5mw wind-powered generators, both sitting next to the abandoned Rules mining installations. The generators were erected without requiring environmental controls, it appears, as the installations were classified as ‘experimental,’ rather than permanent.
According to Buxus this classification is merely a ruse to side-step environmental requirements. The generators, they consider, would never have been allowed because of ‘environmental values and bird life in the area. Furthermore, Buxus are ‘surprised’ that this ‘shortcut’ was adopted by the Delegate for the Environment, whose function, they argue, is to protect the environment.
“We believe that there are enough places in the province to site this type of installation, without causing environmental concern,” read their press release.
They also point out that over 5,000 people have added their signatures as support for a move to convert that area into a natural park, although there hasn’t been any response from the authorities.
Buxus considers that the said area, as a natural park, could be the motor for economic development linked to natural-life tourism, improving the area’s deficient image in the protected spaces sense.
Has Buxus forgotten the existence of the natural park of Cerro-Gordo/Maro, the mountain park of Peña Escrita and the Charca de Suarez water-fowl reserve, all of which lie within the said local area?
In fact, you can only wonder if the good folks that make up Buxus spared a thought, as they sat there on their computer, typing up the report, before clicking the send button, where the electricity came from that was needed to operate the said computer?
We can imagine that they are rightly against coal or oil-powered generating stations, and it goes without mention, nuclear power plants are not on their Christmas card list…
And as for the protection of the bird life… roast chicken has never graced their plates – perish the thought!
