ITV for La Alpujarra

ALP ITVIt might seem strange to be talking about 2011 as we begin 2010, but there is a bit of welcome news concerning a planned ITV station for Alpujarra for that year.
The new Inspección Técnica de Vehiculos will be built within the municipality of Órgiva providing service for a projected 6,000 vehicles a year from the 20 of the 32 municipalities within the Alpujarra.
The installations, costing some 1.6m euros, will have two inspection lines; one for heavy vehicles and the other for medium and light vehicles.
At present, if you need to get an ITV certificate for your car, you have to venture down to Motril or up to Granada or even Guadix, depending where you live in the Alpujarra.
The exact location will be in Los Tablones and will occupy a 5,000-sq/m plot.
The Mayoress, María Ángeles Blanco, is pretty chirpy about the project, as she considers that it will provide an ‘economic injection’ for the area.
When this new ITV station is in operation, the province of Granada will have a total of nine such installations: Motril, Las Gabias, Granada, Peligros, Loja, Guadix, Baza, and Huéscar. There is also a mobile ITV unit, by the way.
