So there were the riot police in Burgos, skipping, gleefully behind fleeing protesters when they came across some firemen… These sturdy gentlemen were very busy indeed, trying to put out a blazing rubbish hopper.

Pensioners Rebel

Pensioners took to the streets to protest over the Government announcement on state pensions, which will mean between 382 and 540 euros a year.

Cuts to Grants for the Handicapped

It’s not only the pensioners, doctors and teachers that are out protesting on the nation’s streets, but also the handicapped, who have seen financial support slashed. There are four million people in Spain who are considered to have a physical or mental handicap to varying degrees.

IBI Increase Fixed at 20%

After a month of protests the Salobreña Mayor has announced that the proposed increase to the IBI (local property tax) will be ‘only’ 20&, instead of the originally announced percentage of 40%.

Forced to Fine?

The municipal police in Granada have complained that they are being coerced by the City Hall to issue fines. This follows two weeks of working to rule; i.e., strictly following regulations, which means that fewer fines are being issued because they are issuing warnings, rather than fines.

Salobreña School Lock In

Almost 100 Pupils and five teachers from the secondary school in Salobreña staged an all-night sit in inside the school before setting off the next day to join the protest march in the city of Granada, joining up with the university students. The parents association supported this initiative.

Unwelcome Guy Fawkes

After the consternation caused by the explosion up at the Pirotécnica Martín fireworks factory in Vélez Benaudalla, it seems that the good folks of Motril are not too keen on having a shop selling fireworks in the middle of town.
