Forced to Fine?

The municipal police in Granada have complained that they are being coerced by the City Hall to issue fines. This follows two weeks of working to rule; i.e., strictly following regulations, which means that fewer fines are being issued because they are issuing warnings, rather than fines.

This ‘understanding behaviour’ on the part of the police means that less money is flowing into the municipal coffers, which has not impressed the Mayor and Co. Consequently, according to the Spokesman for the Independent Police Union, Antonio Jiménez, policemen are being ‘pressured’ so that the police actions result in fines, rather than warnings. He claims that they are being threatened that unless fines begin to roll in, they won’t receive their salaries at the end of the month.

Sr Antonio Jiménez also complains that the union dues that are automatically deducted from their salaries have not been forwarded to the police union for the last three much, which by a ‘quirk of coincidence’ corresponds to the time same period that the policemen began their protests over an increased of work hours. The Spokesman says that he would like to think that this ‘going astray’ of the union funds has nothing to do with their protests, but the end result is that they now don’t have enough funds to finance legal procedures.
