Cortijo Rubbish Protest

mot-rubbish-hoppersSome 250 people demonstrated outside the Motril town-hall building on Tuesday the 15th November over the new cortijo rubbish-collection tax.

Members of the PP opposition party were also present, which is hardly surprising as they actually organised the demonstration, it appears, using social media.

The problem is not so much the tax itself but the charging of arrears, perhaps a tremendous faux pass by the governing party.

Even though that may be the case, the protesters were angry that they will be charged even though there are no nearby rubbish hoppers, with many cortijo residents having to go to Puntalón or even the centre of Motril itself to dispose of their rubbish bags.

It should also be remembered that many cortijo owners use them as weekend retreats only; i.e. their habitual residence is in town where they already pay a community tax for rubbish collection.

The increasing pressure could lead the Town Council to drop the arrears payments at least.
