Attacks on Medical Staff

Medical staff from the Southern Granada Health Management Area, gathered at the doors of the Centro de Salud Motril Centro to express their “total rejection and absolute condemnation” of the attacks on medical staff last week.

The latest attack was against a nurse and a female G.P. at the said Motril Centro de Salud. The incident took place on July the 9th, in a doctor’s surgery. The aggressor, who was being treated, first shouted at and insulted the G.P. treating him, and subsequently physically assaulted the nurse who attempted to calm him down.

The protest outside the clinic was convoked as support for the affected medical staff and to show an energetic rejection of violence against staff members.

People who attack medical staff is on a par with attacking a police officer and culprits can face prison sentences of up to four years, fines, restraining orders, and compensation payments.

In the province of Granada, the number of assaults last year rose to 201 (51 physical and 150 non-physical).

Editorial comment: personally, anybody who attacks a doctor or a nurse should be denied access to public health care and should there have to fork out for private-health care.

Having been attacked 4 times during my ambulance service. 3 times physically and 1 with 2 knives.
And this is only my personal view. Attackers of medical staff and those trying to help them. Should have both ankles and wrists fractured. So to remind them. That every painful step they take. Every movement of the wrists or hands. Is because they felt it was ok to attack medical staff. Whether they be Front desk. reception. Nurses. Doctors . Porters or ambulance. Every painful movement will be a reminder.
To those who think this a tad extreme. First attack. Chap coming out of a house with two kitchen knives hacking at me. Second back of the ambulance. Third at the back doors of the ambulance, 2 chaps not happy with our response. Forth dragging a man off my partner in the back of the ambulance and restraining him on the stretcher. No joy from the authorities. So severe punishments may make others think twice. Bit extreme I know. But nightmares for staff is not nice either. I doubt you’ll publish this. But why should we be punch bags. ??
