In years gone by, visitors to Spain were dismayed to see abandoned boxes of kittens by rubbish bins, donkeys and horses chained to stakes without shade or water, and dogs wandering around with open wounds.

Nerja has a project for a new medical centre – one that has been dragging on for the last 13 years – but owing to a recent court sentence, it is looking even more distant.

Frigiliana Killing

A 76-year-old man allegedly killed his 71-year-old wife in their cortijo in the Axarquia village of Frigiliana, in the area known as Pago de Lizar. The man then left a note confessing to the crime and then committed suicide.
