Nobody can accuse administrations of rushing things, so the Junta’s and the Nerja Town Hall progress on a new Centro de Salud can hardly be described as meteoric.

No, because the plans for this much needed medical facility, which is located between Avenida Pescia and Cuesta del Ingenio, next to the lower end of the Río Chíllar, goes all the way back to 2003.

The present day finds the construction virtually finished, however, and the authorities have said that it will be operative before this year is out.

This project was funded by European funds (surprise!) managed by the Central Government and transferred to the Junta, so if there is anybody to be thanked for this medical facility, it is the European Union, and not the Central or Regional Governments.

The facility is designed to serve around 25,000 residents of Nerja and Frigiliana, as well as absorb the surge in demand that the area experiences during peak tourist months.

This forecast for its eventual inauguration (the end of 2026) is somewhat different to what the Junta bigwig, Carlos Bautista promised this January, which was by April. He described the facilities as “magnificent” and “spectacular,” praising the progress made since construction began in July 2024.
