What used to be Hotel Carmen along Avenida Europa in Almuñécar, later modernised and renamed, Hotel Olas, was severely damaged on Easter Monday by an explosion. Hopes were to reopen come summer.
The cause of the explosion has not been made public but supposedly it had something to do with the boilers – the result was sheets of flames and a tower of black smoke visible all around the municipality.
Well, as you can imagine, the damage was extensive and despite hard work since then, the owners have accepted that this summer is out. Despite the efforts over these months to return to normal as soon as possible, the hotel will not manage to reopen its doors this summer, as had been initially planned.
Back in May, the hotel manager, Ignacio Góngora, was reasonably confident that if it couldn’t be ready by the beginning of summer, then by August at the latest, but it was not to be. It took until May to get the insurance payout and all the necessary paperwork to certify that the building’s structure was still sound.
However, as said above, this was not to be: “Certain pieces of machinery that we had expected to arrive in time have suffered delays in delivery, and there was simply no time left,” he explained. Now they are looking at March as a reopening date.
Regarding the cause of the explosion, after receiving the official report from the Guardia Civil’s investigation team, the manager assures that the exact reasons are now known, although for the moment, “They cannot be made public.”
