Not tiring of the tactic, valid or not, Almuñécar’s PSOE has once again put on the table one of its strategic proposals regarding mobility and infrastructure: the creation of a new road access to La Herradura through the sports pavilion area.

This goes back to 2023 when the socialists first proposed it and which, given that we are presently in the middle of summer and La Herradura is bedlam for anybody trying to enter or park in the village, sounds a pretty good idea.
“Everyone who lives in La Herradura knows that the current access is insufficient. It does not meet the demands of the municipality and in summer it becomes completely gridlocked,” said Álvaro López, PSOE spokesperson for La Herradura.
The PSOE argues that the connection through the pavilion area is the most viable and effective alternative for three fundamental reasons: half of the road is already completed, it would place the access very close to the highway, and, furthermore, it would provide La Herradura with the necessary infrastructure to absorb tourism and residential growth in an orderly and sustainable manner in the future.
Yup, can’t argue with that, right?
The problem is that we are still anchored in an Urban Planning Document that came into effect in 1986; i.e., forty years ago when Almuñécar was half the size that it is now. Benavides tried to bring in a new one (PGOU) and even carried out a referendum to see if Almuñécar and La Herradura, backed his proposed PGOU. They did, but he couldn’t get it through the Junta, which was in the hands of the PSOE at the time, and a party to which he used to belong before falling out with them.
The conservatives, PP, have held the Mayor’s office for 15 consecutive years and in all this time they haven’t managed to get a viable PGOU through either.
The question is, however, can such a new entrance be built, within the limits of the 1986 PGOU. Well, they certainly managed to build a top entrance to Carmenes de Mar within the same limitations, so perhaps they can.
Finally, every town along the coast has the same problem in summer, so it’s not only the fault of who is in power in Almuñécar at the moment, although many would consider building concrete avocados on entrance junctions to Almuñécar instead of turning these traffic-light controlled junctions into roundabouts was patently ridiculous given other traffic priorities..
