The Costa Tropical Sport-Fishing Association is not happy with the PSOE’s suggestion to ban angling on Motril’s Playa El Cable, whose primary designation is for the use of dogs; i.e., playa canina.
Socialist councillor, Gádor Domínguez blamed fishermen for leaving hooks there, which is a hazard for pets, and proposed a fishing ban in the on this beach.
The angling association believes a solution must be based on dialogue, regulatory compliance, and mutual respect, rather than widespread prohibitions that “criminalise an entire group.”
According to official data from the Junta, Granada province has 25,000 registered recreational fishermen (sports fishing and angling) and the association points out that this large group practices legal, responsible and recreational fishing.
What they are saying is that generalising isolated incidents creates an unfair public image and unfairly taints a majority that acts responsibly.
They stresses that responsible anglers obvious don’t intentionally abandon hooks or lines; this equipment is essential, carry an economic cost, and form part of their expensive equipment. Whilst accidental tackle loss happens in any outdoor activity, it should not be confused with deliberately throwing them away whilst on the beach.
However, they consider that individuals who intentionally litter should be identified and fined under current legislation. They point out, banning anglers from the beach because of the irresponsibility of an individual would be akin to banning all dogs from the beach because some individuals don’t pick up their dogs’ droppings.
Daytime fishing during summer is already regulated with time limits to allow coexistence among swimmers, dog beach users, and fishermen.
