IBI Reduction Proposal

The Almuñécar branch of the far-left party, Izquierda Unida (IU) proposed improving relief on IBI (Property Tax) during the last Plenary Meet of the Town Council last month.

They say that their proposal will ensure that these discounts reach as many people as possible, after noting that the number of grants awarded in previous years has been lower than expected.

A couple of years ago they proposed reduced IBI payments for  large families, which was accepted but other groups probably in need of special consideration are not covered, such as people with a 65% disability, low-income pensioners over 65, or those at risk of social exclusion.

This doesn’t mean that those groups don’t receive assistance, because they do but through the municipal  Social Services.

So the IU wants them included within the IBI reduction class, as well as raising the income threshold to qualify for aid. Currently, only those earning below €14,280 per annum, whereas the IU want it to be €16,800. This is also the criteria used by the Mancomunidad when it comes to water-utility-bill assistance.

By the time that you read this article, we will know if this motion prospered.
