Almuñécar Mayor, Juan José Ruiz Joya, together with a gaggle of his councillors, visited the Castillo de San Miguel to see how emergency work on the castle wall was going.
Work had begun on the 22nd of September after strong criticism from the PSOE opposition party concerning how nothing had been done to sort it out in months.

And, perhaps, it is no conicidence that the Mayor chose to visit the works on the 29th, which is, of course, San Miguel (Saint Michael’s Day) who is the patron saint of the old town and namesake of the castle.
The blistering amount of 25,000 euros has been allocated to the budget for the defensive walls, whose fragile state suffered during the rains in March. March is when the PSOE referred to when they said that nothing had been done in months.
The Mayor announced, “The castle is something that requires continuous maintenance, which cannot be stopped if we want to guarantee its preservation, because we’re talking about one of the major symbols that Almuñécar has.”
The Councillor for Public Works and Maintenance, García Gilabert said, “The project required detailed processing,” as the castle is a heritage monument so anything done to it attracts a lot of paperwork and required permits.
This repair work should conclude in the first week of October… but they didn’t say, which October!
