Mayor Julio Prieto put a video up on social media clarifying that, “there is no file upon a desk in any administration for the opening of a centre for immigrant minors in the municipality.”
Young immigrants are known as ‘menas’ which is an acronym for Menor Extranjero No Acompañado.

Now, this kind of centre does not have a very good reputation as there have been cases of an increase in petty crime in municipalities that host them; hence the opposition.
He decided to make the video after an anonymous flyer began to circulate claiming that this was going to happen. There was also graffiti along those lines.
The flyer claimed that the centrre would be located in a private building that is presently under construction.
The Mayor pointed out that it was illogical to point to a private property that received its licence in 2023, having no link to any kind of activity or special purpose.
He went on to say that he had spoken with both a provincial representative for the Central Government and one for the Junta de Andalucia, both of whom denied that there is a project for a centre for menas in Dúrcal.
Consequently, he is calling for people to return to their senses and calm down, emphasising that there is not going to be a mena centre in town, whilst at the same time pointing out that Dúrcal has always expressed solidarity towards others and that the majority of people in in the town have nothing to do with the ‘few’ who seek to forment hate.
