Albuñuelas Dwindles

Albuñuelas might be the most extensive municipality in the Valle de Lecrín, far bigger than the capital of the valley, Dúrcal, but the village itself is tiny and the population dwindling away.

For this reason, the Councillor for the Provincial Department of Demographic Challenge, María Vera, visited the village, to meet Mayor, José Díaz, for an inaugurational event.

The children’s park had been done up costing just of 17,000 euros, provided by her department.

In fact, the Department of Demographic Challenge has spent 51,000 euros in the village in support of families, improving public services, and halting depopulation in the municipality; hence this article.

Councillor Vera pointed out that in order to stop the population bleeding away,  you have to provide services and opportunities in villages.

“In Albuñuelas, we wanted to support initiatives that promote work-life balance, boost the birth rate, and commit to sustainability, because we believe that the future of our municipalities is built using real and local measures,” she said.

For his part, Mayor José Díaz, expressed his gratitude to the Provincial Council and noted that, “these investments represent a fundamental boost to ongoing improvements services and the quality of life of our residents.”

Since the creation of the Demographic Challenge Department, the Provincial Council has supported the municipality of Albuñuelas with various grants. Amongst the most notable initiatives is the improvement to the playground, as well as €3,000 from the Baby Cheque programme,  to support families and encourage births. Porn films is another good incentive… just saying!

There is also the agreement between the Provincial Council and the Granada College of Pharmacists, which provides access to medications for seniors in municipalities at risk of depopulation.
