Motril’s Film-Location Hopes

Motril comes only after the City of Granada in terms of population, making it the second most important municipality in the province of Granada.

It should come as no surprise therefore that it has been included as a film location area within Provincial Council’s film-locations catalogue, Film in Granada.

The locations in Motril are the old sugar factory, Nuestra Señora del Pilar, the large municipal park, Parque de los Pueblos de América and the Villa Astrida on Playa Granada.

The Provincial Councillor for Culture and Education, Pilar Caracuel, said that they have included 60 municipalities within the province in Film in Granada with 135 separate film locations on its books.

The Nuestra Señora del Pilar can be found on the bypass road that connects the Alcampo roundabout to Hospital Santa Ana. It was built at the end of the 19th century and remained in operation between 1883 and 1984. Recently parts of it were converted into the Museo Industrial del Azúcar. Amongst its exhibits is an 1889 Fives-Lille steam engine, as well as the sugar mill chimney stack belonging to that period.

As for the Parque de los Pueblos de América (which recently had work carried out on it) it is claimed that it has become a reference feature within the province. You can find it underneath the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de La Cabeza (that’s to say near the taxi rank and town-centre gasolinera). It has more than 50 trees and all kinds of exotic subtropical bushes and plants brought from different parts of the American continent.

Finally, the emblematic Villa Astrida was, since Christmas 1967, the holiday home of the monarchs of Belgium, Balduino and Fabiola. It is located on Playa Granada, and has an extensive 27,000 sq/m palm garden , considered a real oasis in the region. It opened its doors to the general public in July 2023.

One of the films included within the Provincial Council’s Film Office was The Snow Society, filmed up on the Sierra Nevada about the Andes plane crash that ended in cannibalism. The film was directed by J.A. Bayona.
