Lidl Opens in Nigüelas

Friday the 18th saw the inauguration of the new Lidl branch built right opposite Mercadona within the municipality of Nigüelas.

Both of these supermarkets are on the autovía A-44 exit roundabout 157, which couldn’t be handier for residents of the city of Granada, spewing down the said autovía and heading for the coast. Why try to do your shopping for your stay on the coast in the city with all the traffic congestion or on the crowded coast when you can do it in Nigüelas?

Of course, for residents of Dúrcal and even Padul, these two supermarkets are very handy, not to mention for anybody else living in any one of the municipalities within the Valle de Lecrín.

In fact, if there is somebody with a long face over Lidl’s opening its door in this new location, it is Mercadona who will see a  drop in sales, as will the two small supermarkets within Dúrcal, belonging to Tusúper.

Shoppers will know that Mercadona has been pumping prices up to ridiculous levels, so having Lidl just across the road will lead many to change their shopping habits. One of the first Lentos (residents of Nigüelas) to visit the new supermarket was the Mayor of that village, María Olga Gómez, whom we interviewed some time back. She was accompanied by the Regional Director of Lidl for the provinces of Granada, Almería and Jaén, Marta Ramírez

Lidl spent five-million euros on this new branch, creating 30 new jobs inside its walls, which will please the Mayor of Nigüelas not only because of possible employment for this municipality of around 1,000 inhabitants, but also because of the taxes it will bring into the municipal coffers.

Finally, the branch has solar panels providing 28% of its energy needs and boasts three, free EV charging points. It has 105 parking spaces.

When I went to check it out on the 21st, I expected to see low prices, given that it had only been open five days and badly wanted to get people in through its doors, but they were not much different, with prices for fresh fish such as salmon being about on par with Mercadona across the way.

Lastly, for German residents in the valley, Lidl has a good range of German products, naturally!
