Many drivers might not realise that it is illegal do have something dangling from your rearview mirror, such as an airfreshner and can earn you a fine.

This might seem a little ‘overboard’ but the DGT considers that it can cause a distraction (especially if it falls off) and because it is denying a small field of vision.

It doesn’t matter what size object you put dangling from the mirror, it can get you a nasty fine of 200 euros if officer considers that it is a dangerous distraction for the driver.

Don’t think about sticking a mobile-phone mount on your windscreen either because it will get the same monetary result. The police recommend that drivers put this kind of mounting on the dashboard.

Editorial comment: I would have thought that having a screaming kid in the back would be more of a distraction…
